mixed seeds for a perfect tea

Sadly, too many gardeners fail to take advantage of the many delightful herbal teas available to them from their own garden. Herbal teas are healthy, refreshing and can be sweetened to taste with honey or dried licorice root. Brewing herbal teas is very simple. We recommend using the infusing method, that is pouring boiling water over the herbs and allowing them to steep for 3-5 minutes, then straining the tea and serve. Teas can be served cold or hot, according to preference.

Tasty beets

This garnet-hued winter vegetable is so sweet when cooked that we never feel the need to go beyond boiling (or roasting or smoking) them. But the beet's natural sweetness also means that they're a truly versatile ingredient, making them just as natural of an entree as for dessert. (That's right, you can make cake and even sorbet with those bulbous beets. And pasta. And hummus.) So, it might be time to try something new.

Pears history

The cultivation of the pear in cool temperate climates extends to the remotest antiquity, and there is evidence of its use as a food since prehistoric times. Many traces of it have been found in the Swiss lake-dwellings. The word “pear”, or its equivalent, occurs in all the Celtic languages, while in Slavic and other dialects, differing appellations, still referring to the same thing, are found—a diversity and multiplicity of nomenclature which led Alphonse de Candolle to infer a very ancient cultivation of the tree from the shores of the Caspian to those of the Atlantic.

Red lettuce

Salad Bowl lettuce includes both red and green varieties. Amply named, one plant fills a salad bowl with no need to add other lettuces. “Red Salad Bowl” is a large fast growing rosette lettuce with very pretty burgundy-green crimped leaves. This award winning variety produces large, slow bolting, non-heading plants with sweet, succulent red leaves.
